Whangapoua Beachfront House

Traditional Kiwi bach rebuilt

This house in beautiful Whangapoua on the Coromandel Peninsula is one half of a development of a traditional Kiwi bach that was originally built in the 1960s and split into two titles.

Regulation allowed a re-build on the original footprint only and it is close to the high tide mark, which meant a restricted and somewhat challenging design brief.

Forms were kept simple

The challenge was to make the most of the allowable area and enable the house to open seamlessly onto the beach, whilst still retaining its privacy.

Materials were chosen to be resistant to harsh weather conditions and blend with the stunning rugged beachfront environment.

Forms were deliberately kept simple, in reference to the site’s classical bach heritage.
