WHANGAPOUA HOUSE

This new house is half of a development of a bach originally built in the 1960s, and split into two titles. Regulation allows only a re-build on the original footprint so close to the high tide mark, which meant for a quite restricted design brief. The challenge was to make the most of the allowable area, and enable the house to open seamlessly to the beach whilst still retaining it's own privacy. Materials were chosen to weather and blend with the rugged beachfront environment, and forms were kept deliberately simple in reference to the site's classical bach heritage.
